It is 48 years since Carol and I were married in the Ulverstone Baptist Church. Indeed, a long time ago. Seeing I needed to be in the north of the State for meetings, I decided it was a good opportunity to spend extra time up there; visit friends and family, attend the church where we were married, and drive to places that have special significance.
Rather than staying in Ulverstone, I chose to stay forty kilometers south of the town. Effectively in the bush, surrounded by mountains, bush and magnificent scenery. The B&B I chose was delightful with lots of beautiful gardens. It was peaceful and soothing as you can observe from the following photos:
Added to this were views of cows and sheep with Mt Roland providing a wonderful background:
With so much space, one wonders why so many in the bird community chose to nest in this one tree. Perhaps, they saw how city dwellers live and went into dense populations themselves!!After a restful night, well looked after by my generous hosts, I drove through magic countryside to the Ulverstone Baptist Church and shared in worship with the folk there, many of whom I knew even from so long ago.We were married here. Three of our children were dedicated to God in this sanctuary and I was baptised in the church in 1967. All pretty emotional, but very special.Along the drive to Burnie, I briefly stopped off at the Petrusma family home in the lovely town of Penguin. It looks quite different from the prefabicated house that my parents shipped from Holland when they migrated to Tasmania in 1951. There are may memories here:Going to Burnie I drove to the Round Hill Look-out that overlooks Emu Bay. It was here...on 1 April 1960, that I proposed to Carol under the Aurora Australis (the Southern Lights):Best thing I ever did, but she made me wait for a week before giving me the answer. That is another story.
The Monday morning saw me back in Ulverstone where I visited the Ulverstone High School, where Carol and I were foundation students in 1953:She was a very clever young lady and was the dux of her school in that year and features at the top of the school's honour board (hope it is ok to boast a little about Carol):There was a lot more, but the above will suffice. Before leaving the area I visited the Leven Canyon, near the B&B, and thoroughly enjoyed the views and a solid walk:(Don't forget to click on any photo to get a largerimage.)
I didn't brave the walk down into the Canyon. One day perhaps. With Black Bluff on the background with just a little snow.
